SOLOMONS — The Chesapeake Biological Laboratory’s Chesapeake Analytics Collaborative Building (CACB) has earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizing its exceptional standards in sustainable design and construction.
LEED, the most widely used green building rating system in the world, honors projects that demonstrate leadership in environmental performance, health and sustainability. The CACB achieved 67 points — well above the 60-point threshold for Gold certification — and received no comments or notes for improvement, a notable accomplishment.
“This building reflects our commitment to providing a healthier, more sustainable campus environment,” said Stacy Hutchinson, Associate Director of Administration & Facilities at Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. “I’m thrilled to see this project move from concept to construction to completion and to know it will have a lasting impact on our campus for generations to come.”

Key sustainable features include zero storm run-off, with stormwater managed onsite through a large retention pond beneath an outdoor meeting space and additional capture ponds around the building. Bird-safe glass was installed throughout, significantly reducing bird collisions while also minimizing solar heat gain. A rooftop solar array is projected to supply 34% of the building’s electricity needs.
As a premier institution for environmental science within the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory emphasizes leading by example in sustainability. The achievement underscores the lab’s dedication to green building practices that align with its research mission.
The Chesapeake Analytics Collaborative Building represents a forward-thinking investment in the future of environmental stewardship on the Solomons campus. Its design and performance set a high standard for sustainable development in Southern Maryland and beyond.
