WALDORF, Md. — Charles County patrol officers quickly linked a suspect to a brazen jewelry store theft at St. Charles Town Center after responding to a separate call for an injured person, authorities said.

On June 29 at approximately 11:27 a.m., a male suspect entered a jewelry store inside the Waldorf mall and asked to view a necklace. When an employee handed over the item, the suspect fled on foot through the parking lot with the jewelry. As he ran, the suspect was struck by a vehicle that did not remain at the scene. Despite his injuries, the man continued fleeing on foot and initially escaped.

While officers investigated the theft, they received another call reporting an injured person in the 3800 block of Northgate Place in Waldorf. Callers said the individual had been struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers immediately recognized the man from surveillance footage of the theft — he was wearing the same clothing.

Kevin Williams, Jr., 34, of Waldorf, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the hit-and-run. He was treated and released before being charged with theft. On July 1, Williams was released by the courts on electronic monitoring.

The incident highlights the fast-paced nature of retail theft investigations in Charles County, where suspects sometimes sustain injuries while attempting to evade capture. St. Charles Town Center, a major shopping destination in Southern Maryland, has seen various theft incidents in recent years, though specific recent statistics were not immediately available from law enforcement.

Charles County Sheriff’s Office officials have not released additional details about the value of the stolen necklace or the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. The case remains under investigation.

This event comes amid ongoing concerns about property crime in the region. Local law enforcement frequently urges businesses and shoppers to remain vigilant, review surveillance systems, and report suspicious activity promptly.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the incident or the fleeing vehicle to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
