TORONTO, Ontario — After a relatively quiet start, Canada’s 2026 wildfire season intensified by late June under dry and warm conditions, pushing activity toward the 25-year average. By mid-July, nearly 850 fires were burning nationwide, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, with more than 180 active in Ontario alone.
A NOAA-21 satellite image captured on the afternoon of July 14 showed thick smoke plumes rising from fires in Northwestern Ontario and drifting southeast across southern Ontario, parts of Quebec, and into the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. The smoke tinted skies gray and yellow while turning the sun an eerie orange in affected areas.
Smoke impacts on air quality depended heavily on altitude and local conditions. Where plumes remained high, effects were minimal. Closer to the surface, conditions deteriorated. Toronto experienced unhealthy air quality levels, per AirNow data. Southern Ontario residents also faced a concurrent heat wave, heightening respiratory and health risks for vulnerable populations.

Much of the recent smoke originated from eight fires in Northwestern Ontario that grew significantly on July 13-14. Officials issued evacuation orders for several communities in the region amid rapid fire spread.
Nationwide, Canadian fires had burned approximately 1.9 million hectares (4.7 million acres) by July 14 — substantially below totals from the severe seasons of 2023 and 2025. The remainder of the season’s severity remains uncertain. For residents in the Mid-Atlantic, including Southern Maryland, distant Canadian smoke events have become more frequent in recent years due to shifting climate patterns and larger fire seasons. Even moderate smoke incursions can degrade air quality, particularly when mixed with summer heat and humidity. Local officials often monitor AirNow and advise limiting outdoor activity for sensitive groups when AQI levels rise.
The Canadian fires underscore broader North American wildfire challenges. Contributing factors include prolonged dry spells, warm temperatures and accumulated forest fuels. Ontario’s vast boreal forests are particularly susceptible once conditions align.
As the season progresses, interagency coordination between Canadian provinces, the U.S. and Mexico continues for monitoring, resource sharing and public alerts. Maryland and other eastern states routinely track transboundary smoke through NOAA and EPA tools to protect public health.
While this year’s burned area remains below recent extremes, the mid-July surge and resulting smoke plumes serve as a reminder of the interconnected nature of North American air quality and the ongoing need for preparedness across borders.
