David Williams, who has promoted Potomac Speedway for the past two seasons, announced the family will not renew its lease following the conclusion of the 2026 racing season.
In a statement posted to the track’s Facebook page, Williams expressed gratitude for the support received while committing to finish the current season on a high note.
“After two incredible years of promoting Potomac Speedway, we have made the difficult decision not to renew our lease following the conclusion of the 2026 racing season,” Williams said. “As we look ahead, we remain fully committed to finishing the 2026 season strong and making it a memorable one for our racers, fans, sponsors, and everyone who has supported us along the way.”
Williams took over promotion of the track in 2025 after veteran racer involvement. The facility, located near Budds Creek in St. Mary’s County, has long served as a cornerstone of motorsports in Southern Maryland, hosting weekly racing events that draw competitors and spectators from across the region.
The decision comes amid ongoing challenges facing smaller dirt tracks nationwide, including rising operational costs and the need for sustained community and sponsor support. Williams emphasized appreciation for the entire Potomac Speedway community.
“We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, supporters, racers, fans, employees, and families for your unwavering support and dedication throughout the 2025 and 2026 seasons,” he said. “Your hard work, encouragement, and passion have made these past two years an unforgettable experience.”
He expressed hope that a new operator will emerge to continue the track’s legacy. “It is our sincere hope that someone will step forward to continue the tradition of Potomac Speedway and keep this historic track thriving for many years to come,” Williams added. “Potomac Speedway holds a special place in the racing community, and we wish nothing but the very best for its future.”
