Maryland transportation officials are urging motorists to slow down and drive safely during the busy summer travel season as part of the ongoing “Slow the Fast Down” campaign.
The Maryland Department of Transportation and Maryland State Police highlighted key safety reminders including obeying posted speed limits, especially in work zones; moving over for vehicles with flashing lights; avoiding distractions; never driving impaired; wearing seat belts; and sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
“Drivers should always look twice before changing lanes and turning, as motorcyclists can be harder to see, especially in a vehicle’s blind spot,” officials emphasized. They also advised against aggressive driving and recommended allowing extra time for trips.
Between July 13 and July 19, 10 fatalities were recorded across Maryland, bringing the July total to 28. As of July 20, 219 people have lost their lives on Maryland roadways this year, compared to 254 at the same time last year.
Preliminary data shows drivers accounted for 15 of the July fatalities, passengers 4, pedestrians 4 and motorcyclists 5. Year-to-date figures indicate drivers represent the largest category of fatalities.
Each fatal crash represents a profound loss for families and communities across the state. Officials stressed that these numbers underscore the importance of safe driving habits.
