The Carver Community Arts Center & Makerspace in Lexington Park is progressing toward a fall 2026 opening following a comprehensive 5,000-square-foot renovation.
The project, located at the St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks Carver Recreation Center building at 47382 Lincoln Avenue, transforms the former George Washington Carver Elementary School site into a vibrant community arts and makerspace hub. Current amenities include classroom space, an indoor basketball court, a professional-level performance stage, a gymnasium with bleachers and an adjacent playground.
The eastern wing renovation is a collaborative effort between the St. Mary’s County Arts Council, St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks and PaxSpace, Inc. Funding includes a $100,000 Maryland Makerspace Initiative Program grant from TEDCO for relocation and equipment, plus a $450,000 grant from the Maryland State Arts Council Arts Capital Grant Program approved in July 2025. Additional fundraising and sponsorship opportunities are underway.
PaxSpace, a non-profit member-operated makerspace, will anchor daily operations. The facility will offer 3D printing and laser cutting, digital and electronic fabrication, fiber arts and sewing machines, a pottery and glazing studio with wheels and kilns, a stained and fused glass workshop with metalworking for jewelry, machining and welding, a full metal shop, a full wood shop, a paint booth and dedicated project space.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17, 2026, at 2 p.m., followed by an open house until 4 p.m. The public is invited to tour the new center and learn about its programs.
TruHome Builders, Inc. is leading construction on the project.
