All four Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) members hurt in Friday’s Ambulance 68 crash have returned home and are focused on rest and recovery, the department said in an update, as the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office continues investigating how the crash happened.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau responded to northbound Route 4 near Calverton School Road shortly after 10 a.m. on Aug. 14, where they found the HVFD ambulance had crashed. No other vehicles were involved, and everyone hurt was an HVFD member, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The four injured members’ conditions were described as non-life-threatening. Two were flown by Maryland State Police Aviation to MedStar, a third was taken by ground ambulance to MedStar, and a fourth was transported to CalvertHealth. The Sheriff’s Office has not released the names or specific conditions of those involved.
In a statement released after the crash, HVFD said Ambulance 68 was returning to the station following a routine patient transport when the single-vehicle collision occurred. The department said everyone aboard was an HVFD member and that all were taken to local facilities for evaluation. HVFD thanked the community and asked for thoughts, prayers and privacy for the department and the members involved.
Calvert County Volunteer Fire-Rescue-EMS, the countywide umbrella organization for local fire and rescue departments, also said it was keeping its volunteer members in its thoughts and prayers following the crash, according to Daily Voice.
In its follow-up update, HVFD again thanked the community for its support and asked for continued prayers and privacy while its members heal.
The Sheriff’s Office said the crash remains under investigation. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or who saw events leading up to it, to contact Deputy First Class (DFC) R. Campbell at Ryan.Campbell@calvertcounty.md.gov.
