Four students face juvenile charges following two separate altercations at North Point High School in Waldorf on the first day of the 2026-27 school year, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
The first incident occurred around 8:10 a.m. Monday, roughly five minutes after the school day began, when school administrators and school resource officers responded to a fight inside the building. A preliminary investigation found a 16-year-old student punched another student from behind, causing that student to fall. Other students, ages 16 and 17, joined the altercation before officers and administrators were able to separate those involved.
A second, unrelated altercation involving multiple students broke out elsewhere in the school the same morning. School resource officers separated the students involved in that incident as well.
A school nurse treated one student for minor injuries following the altercations. The Sheriff’s Office said four students will be charged on a juvenile offense report with assault and disruption of school activities. The students also face discipline under Charles County Public Schools’ code of student conduct. The investigation remains ongoing.
Because the students involved are juveniles, they are being charged through the juvenile justice system rather than as adults, in keeping with standard procedure for minors in Maryland.
North Point High has had prior CCSO-documented altercation incidents in recent years, unrelated to Monday’s events. In September 2024, six students were involved in an altercation stemming from an earlier, unreported fight in a school bathroom. In September 2022, four juveniles — three from North Point and one from Maurice J. McDonough High School — were charged with disorderly conduct after fights broke out at a North Point football game.
Neither Charles County Public Schools nor North Point administration had issued a separate public statement on Monday’s incidents beyond the Sheriff’s Office release as of this writing.
