The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team closed out the Seahawk Classic with a scoreless draw against McDaniel College on Saturday at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium, with goalkeeper Breanna Brown turning away all eight shots she faced to keep the Seahawks level.
McDaniel controlled the run of play throughout, finishing with a 21-5 edge in total shots and an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal, plus a 9-2 margin in corner kicks. Brown was tested early, stopping shots from Josie Scanlon and Ava Kolb in the opening minutes before turning away additional attempts from Alaina Miller and Alexis Keller-Posen as the Green Terror pressed for the first half’s duration. St. Mary’s went into the break tied at 0-0 despite managing just two shots of its own in the opening 45 minutes.
The Seahawks generated their best chances of the match early in the second half, when Makayla Marvray fired shots in the 57th and 59th minutes. Brown continued to hold the line at the other end, adding saves on Scanlon, Carly Brock and Kolb to preserve the shutout. St. Mary’s nearly stole the result late, with Sidney Shaw sending a shot just wide in the 78th minute before Charlotte Bryan tested the McDaniel defense in the 83rd. Neither team broke through, and the match ended scoreless.
For McDaniel, sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Ruehl didn’t need to make a save to pick up her third career shutout, extending the Green Terror’s team scoreless streak to 197 minutes, 10 seconds across their first three games. The result also pushed McDaniel to 4-2-3 all-time against St. Mary’s since 2010, including a 1-2-2 mark in road meetings over that stretch.
The draw is the second result of the season for St. Mary’s since opening with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Hood College on Sept. 1, a game in which senior Allie Petryszak, the reigning United East Defensive Player of the Year, scored the tying goal off a Shaw assist before Reagan Chilton won it late. St. Mary’s enters Wednesday at 1-1-1 on the season.
Both teams return to action in the coming days. St. Mary’s hosts Stevenson University Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium, while McDaniel makes its home debut the same day, hosting Hood College at 4 p.m. in Westminster.
