The College of Southern Maryland men’s soccer team fell 4-1 on the road to Garrett College Saturday afternoon in McHenry, as the Lakers’ Darius Hamilton scored twice and set up another goal in the win.
Garrett wasted little time asserting control, with Hamilton opening the scoring at 10:09 off a Lucas Alonso Garcia assist, then Garcia doubling the lead himself less than five minutes later at 15:03 with an assist from Max Hinchy. Southern Maryland got on the board before halftime when Blaine Ganley scored unassisted in the 19th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 heading into the break. Garrett pulled away in the second half, with Hamilton scoring again at 52:01 off a Christopher Manherz assist, and Jack Ferguson closing out the scoring at 78:45 with Hamilton picking up his second assist of the day.
Southern Maryland used three goalkeepers over the course of the match: Matthew Knapp played the bulk of the game and made four saves on seven shots faced, allowing three goals, while Hayden Miller (two saves, no goals allowed) and Carlton Teats-Riveria (one save, one goal allowed) each saw late action. Garrett’s Wyatt Hull played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lakers. The loss came in front of 91 fans at Garrett’s home field.
The result is CSM’s latest test under first-year head coach Scott Kopicko, who took over a program that went 4-9-4 overall last season and opened this year’s campaign hosting Harford Community College on Aug. 21.
