The St. Mary’s College of Maryland field hockey team dropped its first game of the season Saturday, falling 1-0 to Bridgewater (Va.) College in a non-conference matchup that marked the Seahawks’ second straight one-goal decision.
Bridgewater needed just five minutes to find the game’s only goal, as Maylynn Watson buried the rebound of a blocked shot at 4:47 for her first goal of the season — and the Eagles’ first win of 2026. St. Mary’s, now 1-1, never found an answer. The Seahawks managed only five shots across the full 60 minutes, with their best chances coming in the second quarter from sophomores Morgan Knott and Julie Presgraves, who each put an attempt on frame. Knott led St. Mary’s with two shots, one on goal.
Bridgewater controlled play throughout, out-shooting St. Mary’s 13-5 overall and 6-2 in shots on goal, while also holding an 11-6 edge in penalty corners. Watson finished with a game-high four shots, all on target. Goalkeepers Rachel Adel and Thaleia Khader combined for the shutout, Bridgewater’s first of the season. Junior Sophia Kent made four saves in the St. Mary’s net. The result nudges Bridgewater ahead in the all-time series with the Seahawks, 9-8.
The loss follows an overtime win to open the season, when Presgraves scored the first goal of her collegiate career to beat Batten University 1-0 on Sept. 3, part of a program that won both the United East Conference regular-season and tournament titles a year ago en route to its third NCAA Tournament appearance.
St. Mary’s continues a two-game road-and-home stretch next week, traveling to York (Pa.) on Saturday, Sept. 12 at noon before returning to Jamie L. Roberts Stadium to host No. 23 Washington & Lee on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m.
