The St. Mary’s College of Maryland volleyball team swept Sweet Briar College 3-0 Tuesday evening at the Michael P. O’Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena, winning by set scores of 25-20, 25-9, 25-13 to pick up its second straight victory.
St. Mary’s took control early, winning a tighter opening set before pulling away in the second, 25-9, and carrying that momentum into a 25-13 third-set finish. Sophomore Vlada Costenco led the offense with seven kills on a .600 hitting percentage, while junior Maya Mauro added six kills and sophomore Erianna Mendieta chipped in five. First-year Valen Mosley contributed four kills and five service aces.
Setters Camilla Galeano and Lauren Panageotou combined for 22 assists — 13 from Galeano, who also had seven aces, and nine from Panageotou. Junior Elizabeth Childs led the defense with six digs. As a team, St. Mary’s held Sweet Briar to a -.120 hitting percentage while recording 18 service aces.
The win follows a split weekend at Owings Mills Gymnasium, where St. Mary’s pushed Stevenson University to a five-set battle before falling 3-2, then bounced back with a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Mennonite behind 20 assists from Galeano — the program’s first win of the season. With Tuesday’s sweep, St. Mary’s improves to 2-2.
The Seahawks head to Virginia this weekend for the Maroon Classic in Salem, opening Friday against Salem College at 2 p.m. and Greensboro College at 8 p.m., before facing Methodist at 1 p.m. and Brevard at 3 p.m. Saturday.
