The College of Southern Maryland women’s soccer team’s unbeaten start under first-year head coach Thomas Wasley came to an end Thursday, falling 2-0 on the road to Hagerstown Community College — CSM’s first shutout loss of the season and its first defeat since Wasley’s debut win over CCBC Catonsville on Sept. 1.
The game was scoreless through the first half, with both teams managing three shots apiece. Hagerstown broke through in the second half, with Angie Ayala-Luna scoring off an Alessandra Portillo assist in the 51st minute before Makayla Wright added an insurance goal in the 74th minute off a Carson Furajter assist. CSM couldn’t find an answer at the other end. The Hawks finished with an 8-8 tie in total shots and an 8-7 edge in shots on goal for Hagerstown, but goalkeeper Kiran Cole turned away all eight shots she faced to preserve the shutout. Addison Burris led CSM with three shots, and Yaliyah Reyes added two; goalkeeper Raynna Ratchford made five saves in the loss.
The result is a reversal from the last meeting between the two programs: in 2023, CSM knocked off a then-undefeated Hagerstown squad, 4-3, in one of the higher-scoring results of that season.
Wasley, hired in June, brings more than 20 years of coaching experience, including stints with DC Soccer, Stafford Soccer, and Vienna Soccer, and played collegiately at William Carey University before finishing his career at Marymount University, where he earned All-Academic honors. He inherited a program coming off a 13-4-1 campaign in 2025 that reached the NJCAA Region 20 Championship game as the No. 1 seed and 22nd-ranked team nationally — the program’s first appearance in that title game since 2013 — before falling to 18th-ranked Anne Arundel.
