The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team battled Stevenson University to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium, unable to find a second goal despite a lopsided edge in shots.
Sophomore Addison Campbell got St. Mary’s on the board just two minutes in, giving the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead they carried through most of the first half, during which St. Mary’s put 11 shots on the Stevenson goal. The Mustangs equalized in the 32nd minute on an own goal, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1.
St. Mary’s kept up the pressure after halftime, registering 10 more shots and six corner kicks over the final 45 minutes, but Stevenson goalkeeper Isabella Serano turned aside four second-half saves to preserve the tie. Campbell nearly added a second goal in the 66th minute before Serano denied her, and Keira O’Neail drew another save three minutes later; O’Neail and Megan Rusk each put additional shots on frame later in the half. St. Mary’s pushed for a winner into stoppage time, earning a 90th-minute corner and a final shot from Jill Kemp, but couldn’t break through.
St. Mary’s finished with a commanding 21-6 edge in total shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Breanna Brown made one save for the Seahawks, while Serano finished with eight for Stevenson. With the draw, St. Mary’s moves to 1-1-2 on the season, and Stevenson falls to 0-2-1.
St. Mary’s travels to the Salisbury Classic this weekend, facing John Carroll University on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m.
