A Waldorf man is being held without bond after Charles County narcotics detectives said they recovered roughly $10,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis from a hotel room he was staying in.
Detectives assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Section served a search warrant Aug. 28 at a room inside a hotel in the 11700 block of Business Park Drive in Waldorf, as part of an ongoing drug distribution investigation. Shortly before the search, detectives located the suspect, Tyriek Lamont Courtney, 35, of Waldorf, at a nearby gas station and arrested him.
A search of his hotel room turned up drug packaging materials and cash alongside the drugs, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Courtney was charged with felony drug violations and is being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center; he has not been convicted, and the charges represent allegations only.
The two drugs recovered carry very different legal exposure. Cocaine is a Schedule II narcotic under Maryland law, and possessing it with intent to distribute is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine for a first offense.
Cannabis, by contrast, has been legal in Maryland for adults 21 and older to possess and purchase from licensed dispensaries since 2023 — but selling or distributing it outside that licensed system remains illegal. Unlicensed cannabis distribution is generally a misdemeanor for quantities up to 50 pounds and becomes a felony above that threshold, with large-scale trafficking carrying mandatory minimum sentences; the release did not specify how much cannabis was recovered.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
