Three weeks into the fall season, Calvert County’s four public high schools have produced two undefeated teams in volleyball and field hockey, three unbeaten football programs, and a run of in-county rivalry games that have already reshuffled the standings more than once.
Football
Calvert, Huntingtown and Patuxent remain unbeaten. Calvert opened with a 27-15 win at Leonardtown before routing McDonough 35-15, outscoring opponents 62-30 through two games. Patuxent has been the county’s most dominant team on the field, beating Westlake 12-6 and then routing Thomas Stone 48-7 for a 60-13 scoring margin. Huntingtown’s 14-7 win over North Point on Sept. 11 extended a winning streak that actually stretches back to last season — the Hurricanes had won five straight before that game, meaning Friday’s victory made it six in a row dating to 2025, with an average scoring margin of better than 28 points a game over that stretch. Huntingtown, the reigning back-to-back Class 2A state runner-up, next hosted McDonough in its conference opener. Northern is the only Calvert team without a perfect record, at 1-1 after a 52-18 win over Chopticon and a 20-10 loss to St. Charles.
Volleyball
Northern has been the county’s most consistent team in any fall sport, sweeping all five of its matches in straight sets to open 5-0 overall and 4-0 in region play — wins over La Plata, Thomas Stone, McDonough, Patuxent and, most recently, a 3-0 sweep of county rival Calvert on Sept. 16. Calvert’s own run has been strong but not spotless: the Cavaliers beat Patuxent and St. Charles in straight sets before edging Huntingtown 3-1 in a four-set battle (21-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-18) on Sept. 14 that ended the Hurricanes’ unbeaten start. Calvert then lost to Northern in the Sept. 16 rematch, leaving the Cavaliers 3-1. Huntingtown, which had opened 3-0 including a sweep at Westlake, sits 2-2 after that loss to Calvert. Patuxent has had the toughest go, falling to 1-3 with a third straight loss — a sweep at the hands of Northern on Sept. 14.
Boys soccer
Huntingtown and Calvert have been the county’s top two boys soccer programs, and they’ve already played twice. The teams opened the season with a 0-0 draw on Aug. 26, before Calvert edged Huntingtown’s county rival Northern 1-0 the same day at Great Mills’ expense… more relevantly, Calvert has gone on a tear since, beating North Point 1-0, St. Charles 1-0 and Thomas Stone 5-0, before falling 2-1 to Northern on Sept. 17 in a game that dropped the Cavaliers to 4-2-1. Huntingtown, meanwhile, bounced back from an Aug. 18 loss to Annapolis to win four of its next five, including a 3-1 win over McDonough on Sept. 17, and sits 4-2 atop the Class 2A South II Region. Northern has been the county’s streakiest team, alternating results all season to sit 3-3-2, with wins over Patuxent, Chopticon (tie) and St. Charles mixed with losses to Great Mills, Leonardtown and DuVal — before beating Calvert to close the stretch covered here. Patuxent has struggled at 2-4, with an 8-0 loss to La Plata on Sept. 17 its low point, offset by wins over St. Charles (5-2) and Thomas Stone (7-1).
Girls soccer
Huntingtown’s girls team looked like the county’s best through four games — wins over Annapolis, Southern Harwood, Lackey (11-0) and Great Mills pushed the Hurricanes to 4-0 — before a 2-0 loss to McDonough on Sept. 17 snapped that run and dropped the team to 4-1. Calvert has been steadier if less explosive, going 3-1-2 with wins over Elizabeth Seton (8-0), North Point and St. Charles (11-0), a loss to Archbishop Spalding, and two draws, including a double-overtime 1-1 tie against Northern on Sept. 17 that closed out the stretch.
Field hockey
Patuxent and Huntingtown have combined to make Calvert County field hockey nearly unbeatable in the season’s first three weeks. Patuxent is a perfect 3-0, outscoring opponents 23-1 across wins over La Plata twice (10-0 and 9-0) and Annapolis (4-1). Huntingtown is 4-1, with wins over Southern Harwood, La Plata, Calvert (7-0) and Great Mills before a 1-0 loss at Chesapeake on Sept. 15 — its only blemish. Calvert has had a rough start in this sport specifically, sitting 0-2 after losses to Chopticon (0-10) and Huntingtown (0-7). Northern is 0-1.
Cross country and golf
