Charles County’s seven public high schools are a little more than two weeks into the fall sports season, and the early results show a football landscape shaken up by an eligibility penalty at the defending state champion, along with strong starts for St. Charles across multiple sports and La Plata leading the county in boys soccer.
Football
St. Charles is the county’s only unbeaten football team, opening 2-0 after a 30-0 win over Lackey and a 20-10 win over Northern, outscoring opponents 50-10 through two weeks. The Spartans host Patuxent this week before a stretch of conference games that includes matchups with St. Charles’s fellow county rivals over the next several weeks.
North Point, last year’s Maryland state champion, has had a far rockier start. The Eagles’ Week 1 matchup against McDonough was declared a forfeit before it was even played, after the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association ruled North Point had violated out-of-season contact rules — specifically, allowing too high a share of returning players to take part in offseason activity under the supervision of contracted coaches during a restricted period. North Point was still required to play the game; had the Eagles won, the result would have been recorded as a forfeit loss regardless, and the outcome on the field went in McDonough’s favor. North Point then lost to Huntingtown 14-7, leaving the Eagles 0-2. It’s the second straight season a rules violation has cost North Point wins: the program forfeited its first seven games of the 2025 season after an ineligible student-athlete, who did not meet the school’s residency requirements, was found to have competed for the team. Westlake also opened its season under a similar out-of-season contact penalty against Patuxent, though the Wolverines’ 12-6 loss in that game would have stood regardless of the forfeit ruling; Westlake has since rebounded to 1-1 with a 12-0 win over Chopticon.
Elsewhere, McDonough (1-1) picked up a forfeit win in its opener before falling to Calvert 35-15. Lackey (1-1) lost its opener to St. Charles 30-0 before routing Leonardtown 35-0. Thomas Stone (1-1) beat La Plata 33-21 in the county’s Week 1 rivalry game before a 48-7 loss to Patuxent. La Plata sits at 0-2, having lost that Thomas Stone opener and then falling 47-0 to Great Mills.
Volleyball
North Point’s volleyball team has had a far smoother start than its football counterpart, opening region play 3-0 with straight-set sweeps over St. Charles, Chopticon and Thomas Stone. St. Charles volleyball, by contrast, has struggled early at 1-2, with a win over Lackey sandwiched between losses to North Point and Calvert, plus a region loss to Thomas Stone this week.
Soccer and field hockey
La Plata’s boys soccer team is the only Charles County squad above .500 in any fall sport tracked so far, sitting at 3-3-1. McDonough (0-6) and Thomas Stone (0-4-1) have had tougher early goes on the boys’ side. On the girls’ side, St. Charles has opened 0-2. North Point’s field hockey team is 0-1 to begin the season.
Cross country and golf seasons are also underway across the county, though county-wide meet results were not yet available at publication time.
