Solomons will turn into one big oyster crawl on Saturday, Oct. 10. The second annual Shuck It! Solomons Oyster Trail runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and invites visitors to eat, drink, shop and explore the island town at the mouth of the Patuxent River.
Participating restaurants and food stops will serve oysters alongside local favorites, specialty dishes, cocktails and day-of specials. Shops, businesses and organizations around town will have their own activities and offerings for trail-goers.
How the passport works
Visitors can pick up a Shuck It! passport, stop at participating locations and collect stamps for a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses. Passports will be available at several spots, including:
- Calvert Marine Museum
- Boomerangs
- Juice Buzz
- Maertens Fine Jewelry
- Savvie’s Blue Shell Boutique
The prize winner will be drawn at 5 p.m. at the Tiki Bar stage, an hour after the trail wraps up. Event details are at visitsolomonsmd.com/shuck-it-solomons, and the full list of participating businesses is posted on the Shuck It! Solomons Facebook event page.
A full day on the island
The trail shares the day with one of Solomons’ longest-running fall traditions. The Calvert Marine Museum will host its free Patuxent River Appreciation Day, known locally as PRAD. It celebrates the river with live music, environmental exhibitors, arts and crafts vendors, a petting zoo, face painting, model boat building and more. Families can spend the morning at the museum and the afternoon working through the oyster trail.
Around town, the Solomons Scarecrow Stroll will add some fall color. Local businesses and organizations will set out scarecrows dressed in their best 250th birthday attire, a nod to the nation’s semiquincentennial. That’s the same milestone the Calvert 250 Committee has been marking with events across the county all year. Visitors can take in the displays on foot as they move between trail stops.
History fans have one more option that day. Calvert 250’s lineup includes a War of 1812 living history program at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum in St. Leonard, also set for Oct. 10.
