St. Mary’s College of Maryland will induct its first-ever team into its Athletic Hall of Fame this fall: the 1995 women’s sailing squad that won the program’s first ICSA Women’s Dinghy National Championship.
The team headlines the Class of 2026, the 24th induction class since the Hall of Fame began in 1990. The class also includes three-time All-America skipper Madeleine Bell Hughes Carty ’94 and field hockey and women’s lacrosse standout Lauriann Parker ’13. Longtime equipment room manager Earl Dean will be inducted as an Athletic Legend.
The induction ceremony is Friday, Oct. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Nancy R. & Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center, as part of Hawktoberfest & Family Weekend, the college’s version of homecoming. Tickets are sold only online through the Hawktoberfest registration site; there are no on-site sales. The inductees will also be recognized at halftime of the Seahawks women’s soccer game at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
The 1995 national champions
The 1995 crew won the first of two ICSA Women’s Dinghy national titles in school history; the second came in 2007. The roster included seven current or future All-Americans. Skipper Danielle Brennan Myrdal ’98 won the Madeleine Cup as the low-point skipper in Division A, and Elizabeth Graves ’95 took the Judy Lawson Trophy. Rounding out the team were crew Courtney Cook ’97, Kate Drew Fears ’95, Christina Dyer Hope ’95 and Kristen Jones Mangus ’95, along with skipper Kerry Murphy Myers ’95.
The title is part of a long run of sailing success at St. Mary’s, which has won 11 ICSA national championships across team racing, dinghy, singlehanded and match racing events.
Madeleine Bell Hughes Carty ’94
Carty earned All-America honors as a skipper in 1992, 1993 and 1994. Longtime head coach Adam Werblow has credited her with helping put St. Mary’s women’s sailing on the map. She led the Seahawks to second place at the 1994 women’s dinghy national championship, a year before the title, and won the Judy Lawson Trophy that year as low-point skipper in Division B.
Lauriann Parker ’13
Parker was an all-region pick in both field hockey and women’s lacrosse. She was the Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in field hockey in 2009 and in lacrosse in 2010. She left the field hockey program as its all-time leader in goals (44), assists (23) and points (111), records that stood for 13 years. In lacrosse, she scored 92 goals and added 107 assists from the midfield.
Earl Dean, Athletic Legend
Dean managed the SMCM equipment room for 27 years, from 1994 to 2021, and worked at the college for more than 40 years in all. He handled game-day operations from setup to breakdown and was one of the Seahawks’ most devoted fans. The Legend category honors people whose contributions to St. Mary’s athletics go beyond statistics and records.
The Hall of Fame inducted a class every year from 1990 through 2000, then every other year from 2000 to 2023, before going back to annual classes. The Class of 2024, the 22nd, honored longtime athletics director Scott Devine, faculty athletics representative Dr. Jeffrey Byrd and former President Tuajuanda Jordan. This year’s ceremony is also the first Hawktoberfest since the college named Sharief Hashim vice president for athletics.
