A highway worker was injured early Wednesday when a car struck a vehicle slowing for a lane closure on northbound Interstate 97 near Route 32 in Millersville and then veered into an active work zone, Maryland State Police said in a news release.

Troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack were called to the area at about 12:45 a.m. for a report of a pedestrian-involved crash. Police said the driver of a Toyota Camry, a 47-year-old Baltimore man, began slowing for the lane closure when, for reasons not yet known, a Mercedes driven by a 62-year-old Elkridge man hit the Toyota from behind. The Mercedes then veered into the work zone and struck a highway worker and a portable light tower.

The worker, a 31-year-old man, was taken by ground transport to a local trauma center. State police did not describe his condition. No one else was reported hurt.

A Maryland state trooper was parked in a marked patrol car with emergency lights on at the time of the crash, police said.

The cause has not been determined. Investigators believe impairment may have been a contributing circumstance, and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, according to state police. The State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation, which will be presented to the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office when it is finished.

Anne Arundel County emergency medical services responded along with troopers from the Glen Burnie and Annapolis barracks. The State Highway Administration helped close lanes, and the closures lasted about three hours.
