A Huntingtown man is charged with murder after a woman was fatally shot inside a home on Harvey Road early Monday, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said.

Troy Elliott Harrod, 43, of Huntingtown, faces first-degree and second-degree murder charges in the death of Alva Larita Harrod, 55, also of Huntingtown, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release issued Tuesday.

What deputies found

Patrol deputies were called to the 4400 block of Harvey Road shortly after 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, for a report of gunshots, the release said.

When they arrived, deputies found a man standing in the driveway who told them he had shot someone, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies identified him as Troy Harrod.

Inside the home, deputies found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds. They tried life-saving measures, but she was later pronounced dead, the release said.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau took over the case. They recovered a rifle and shell casings inside the home, according to the release.

Harrod was taken into custody without incident and taken to the Calvert County Detention Center.

The Sheriff’s Office did not say whether the two knew each other or what may have led to the shooting. Criminal charges are accusations, and Harrod is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
