WHITE PLAINS — Piccowaxen Middle School golfers brought home the county title last week, winning the annual Charles County Public Schools middle school golf tournament at White Plains Golf Course.
Six schools competed Oct. 21: Theodore G. Davis, Glymont, Matthew Henson, Piccowaxen, Milton M. Somers and Benjamin Stoddert middle schools, according to CCPS. Somers placed second and Davis third. The school system did not release individual scores or team totals.
Golf is one of several countywide competitions for Charles County middle schoolers during the school year. Students also compete in archery, volleyball, basketball and track events, the school system said.
For school leaders, those events are about more than trophies. Joseph Evans, an assistant principal at Stoddert who coaches several of the Stallions’ teams, said activities outside the classroom give students a reason to show up.
“When students feel connected to their school through athletics, clubs, mentoring programs, performing arts or other activities, they are often more motivated to attend school, remain engaged and take ownership of their education,” Evans said in the CCPS announcement.
Middle school, he said, is the right time to start. Sports and extracurriculars help students feel part of their school and build skills they will use in school and beyond, according to Evans.
Charles County Public Schools serves 27,904 students in 38 schools. The next countywide middle school events on its calendar include archery, volleyball, basketball and track.
