ST. LEONARD — A 30-year-old Millersville man died Sunday afternoon after the motorcycle he was riding and an SUV collided at the intersection of Route 4 and St. Leonard Road in St. Leonard, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said.

AJ Travis Watson was riding north on Route 4, also known as Solomons Island Road, when the crash happened at about 3:23 p.m. Nov. 1, according to the sheriff’s office. The other vehicle, a Honda SUV, was driven by Carloe Anne Hamel, 64, of Lusby. She was not injured.

Deputies from the sheriff’s Patrol Bureau and emergency medical crews began life-saving measures at the scene and continued them as Watson was taken to CalvertHealth Medical Center in Prince Frederick. He was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators have not said what caused the collision or how the two vehicles came together. The sheriff’s office said only that the investigation into the circumstances is continuing. No charges have been announced.

Crash team called in

The sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the intersection to assist. Several people saw the crash and gave information to deputies, according to the release.

Deputy First Class Samuel Grierson is leading the investigation. Anyone who saw the crash or the events leading up to it is asked to email him at samuel.grierson@calvertcountymd.gov. A deadly year for riders

Watson’s death comes days after the Chronicle reported that a 36-year-old Bryans Road rider was killed on Route 228 in Waldorf.

Motorcycle deaths statewide have climbed back this year after a sharp drop. Maryland recorded 48 motorcyclist deaths in 2025, down from 90 in 2024, according to the governor’s office. By mid-August of this year, preliminary Maryland Department of Transportation figures already showed 49 motorcyclist deaths, WTOP reported, about the same as all of 2025, with more than four months left in the year.

State safety officials have urged drivers to look twice for motorcycles before turning or changing lanes, since riders are easy to lose in blind spots, and to obey speed limits. The state also runs free rider-training sessions each spring.

St. Leonard has seen fatal motorcycle crashes before. The Chronicle reported a Dunkirk man’s death in a St. Leonard motorcycle crash in July 2022 and the death of a St. Leonard rider in 2019.

The sheriff’s office has not said whether the intersection was closed or for how long. Updates will be posted as investigators release more information.
