On Tuesday, the Calvert County community gathered in large numbers for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch in North Beach. The event, held at 4100 5th Street, was marked by the attendance of nearly 400 people, including local dignitaries, state officials, and residents eager to explore the facility’s offerings.

The new library, a $12.5 million project funded through a combination of state grants and local contributions, signifies a major enhancement in community resources. Maryland’s County Library Capital Grant program contributed approximately $5.6 million, with Calvert County allocating about $6.6 million. Additional support included a parcel of land from the Town of North Beach and donations totaling $350,000 from both North Beach and Chesapeake Beach.

Key features of the library include state-of-the-art technology like a 3D printer, laser etcher, and various high-tech sewing and embroidery machines. These tools are designed to support a wide range of community activities, from educational programs to creative projects.

During the event, Calvert Library Executive Director Carrie Willson highlighted the importance of the library as a center for lifelong learning and community building. The ceremony also included a nod to the area’s history, with a land acknowledgment in the program, recognizing the original inhabitants of the land.

State Librarian Irene Padilla and several local officials spoke about the transformative potential of the new library. Calvert Library Foundation President Scott Deacon and Capital Campaign Chair Dr. Mark Frazer acknowledged the generosity of over 400 donors who contributed to the library’s special features.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by public tours of the new facility, which has already seen significant use. Within the first few days of opening, the library welcomed over 3,200 visitors, issued 214 new library cards, and saw full bookings for its study rooms.

The Twin Beaches Branch replaces its predecessor with a modern facility equipped to meet the diverse needs of its community. Its opening marks a new chapter in Calvert County’s commitment to providing accessible educational resources and community spaces.
