Charles County Sheriff’s Officers Lieutenant Charles “Chuck” Gass, Jr. and Lieutenant Kevin Conley recently graduated from Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command, Sheriff Troy D. Berry announced.
The School of Police Staff and Command is an intensive program designed to prepare law enforcement professionals for senior command roles. Sheriff Berry praised the officers’ dedication, stating, “Participating in this rigorous academic program requires a great deal of time, commitment, and dedication from these officers and their families. I am extremely proud of their commitment and look forward to their continued success as leaders within our Agency.”
The program spans 10 weeks, during which officers reside on campus and engage in traditional classroom instruction. The curriculum covers various topics essential for upper-level command positions, including planning and policies, media relations, organizational behavior, budgeting and resource allocation, human resources, and contemporary policing. Students face rigorous academic challenges, including written examinations, projects, presentations, quizzes, and a staff study paper. Successful completion of the program may also earn students six units of undergraduate credit from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
The Center for Public Safety, established at Northwestern University in 1936, aims to enhance university-based education and training for law enforcement professionals. Over the years, the Center has expanded its offerings to include a variety of courses and programs in police training, management training, and executive development. Since the first session of the School of Police Staff and Command in 1983, the program has graduated over 30,000 officers nationally and internationally.
