WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric L. Richmond (LA-02) and Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) introduced a resolution to censure President Trump for making racist comments in a meeting on immigration at the White House:
“I am proud to co-sponsor this resolution of censure introduced today and thank Rep. Richmond and Rep. Nadler for their leadership. The racist comments made by President Trump cannot be allowed to stand – they are disgraceful and damaging to our standing in the world.
“Immigrants of every race and nationality built our country, giving every manner of toil and devotion to seeing it made strong and prosperous. This President’s vile and racist denigration of certain groups of immigrants has harmed America’s reputation as a place of refuge and opportunity and as a shining beacon of democracy.
“It is deeply appalling that President Trump has it in his power to cause harm to so many and to do so much damage to our country with both his words and his actions. I hope the Congress will have an opportunity to express its disagreement with his comments and to make it clear that his behavior does not comport with the values of our country or the integrity of its highest office.”
