1:25 p.m.- At a press conference today, Sheriff Tim Cameron announced the shooting suspect has been identified as 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins. He is a student at the school. Sheriff Cameron also states that the 16 year female student is suffering from life threatening injuries at UM PG Hospital Center. The Sheriff has also identified the School Resource Officer(SRO) as Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskell, who is also a member of SWAT.
The Sheriff states that there is some information leading them to believe there is some sort of relationship between Rollins and the female student, but cannot comment on it further.
11:30 a.m.- Sheriff Cameron, in a Press Conference right now, confirms that the shooting suspect was pronounced deceased at 10:41 a.m.
11:22 a.m.- From the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Facebook Page:
Scene is contained and safe at Great Mills High School. Buses are transporting students to reunification location at James Forrest Career and Technology Center. We have two confirmed victims; no reported fatalities. One victim transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, one to Washington Hospital Center and the shooter has been transported to Charles Regional. No reports on severity of injuries or any identifying information at this point.
10:20 a.m.- We are currently awaiting a Press conference from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. We are receiving reports that indeed a school resource officer did shoot the suspect. We are also receiving reports that the 3 individuals injured in this incident are in critical condition. This is still developing and we will update more when we receive additional information fro the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office reports that there are NO fatalities at this time.
Sheriff Tim Cameron states that a student shot at a female student and then was engaged by the school resource officer. Three individuals were injured, not including the shooter and were transported to area hospitals.
9:25 a.m.- We have received unconfirmed reports that the suspect had a knife and was stabbing/attempting to stab another subject and that the suspect was shot by an armed security officer. This is unconfirmed from an anonymous source.
What is known at this time:
- A shooting took place at Great Mills High School at approx. 800 a.m.
- Three individuals were transported; two to MedStar St. Mary’s and one to Charles Regional.
- One person sustained a gunshot to the leg and CPR was being performed on one individual.
- The situation is contained according to the Sheriff’s Department.
- No information is available on the suspect.

9:10 a.m.- From the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office:
There has been a school shooting at Great Mills High School. Sheriff’s Office is on scene and the scene is contained. St. Mary’s County Public Schools and the Sheriff’s Office are advising parents to respond to the Leonardtown High School auditorium and reunification will take place at the James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center. Please do not respond to Great Mills High School.
8:56 a.m.- Units are clearing the scene of Great Mills High School following a shooting that has left at least 3 injured. Units report at least 3 people were transported to area hospitals, with one confirmed sustaining a gunshot to the leg. It is also reported CPR was in progress and is unclear which victim it is being performed on. Multiple sources are reporting at least one death, but that has not been confirmed by the Southern Maryland Chronicle through any official source.
8:27 a.m.- Units are reporting there are at least two transports, with one having a gunshot to the leg.
8:01 a.m.: A 9-1-1 call has been placed for a reported possible gunshot/stabbing at or in the area of Great Mills High School.
