PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a 76-year-old manwhosuffered astroke and possible internal bleedingaboarda cruise ship approximately 75-miles southeastof the Chesapeake Bay,Saturday.

The captainaboard the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway, used a satellite phone to contact watchstanders at the Fifth District Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, at10:18 a.m., to request assistance.

An aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopterfrom Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, was conducting training and diverted to assist the man. The helicopter aircrew hoisted the man and a nurse aboard and brought them to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital.

“Letting the Coast Guard know of these situations as soon as possible is vital,” said Lt. j.g. Christopher Saylor,OperationsWatchstander at the command center. “In this case, the fast notification helpedfacilitate a diligent response and got the victim the proper care in a timely manner.”
