UPDATE 4/20/2018 9:45 a.m.:The fire was the result of a smoking materials station igniting on the exterior of the building. The fire spread to nearby combustible materials before extending to the building. Employees of the establishment smelled smoke and discovered the fire outside the kitchen. Attempts to extinguish the fire by the employees were unsuccessful prior to the fire department arrival. All restaurant employees and approximately five customers were able to escape the building without injury.

UPDATE 6:10 p.m.: Benedict Volunteer Fire Department now has control of scene, all other units returning. Sources at the scene say the structure is a complete loss.

UPDATE 4:55 p.m.: Benedict River’s Edge Restaurant fully involved fire that may have started in the kitchen. Units from Charles, Calvert, PG and St. Mary’s along with DNR,and SMECO responding. Exterior operations only. MEDEVAC(trooper 2) has been requested; 15 minute ETA.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal has been notified and is en route.

Benedict, MD: Benedict Rivers Edge Restaurant is a working fire. Units are reporting the building is fully involved, with fire through the roof, and heavy smoke. Units from Charles County, Calvert County and St. Mary’s are en route, along with river boats. Command is reporting approximately 60 firefighters involved.

Command has ordered exterior orders only, evacuate entire building. A Partial collapse has been relied to Command

Expect heavy delays in the area and watch for emergency crews.
