WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration’s attempt to limit asylum claims for immigrants at the U.S. border through a rule to be implemented tomorrow:

“Today’s announcement is yet another indicator of this Administration’s inhumane and ill-conceived asylum policies.  Imposing illegal restrictions on refugees seeking asylum through the proper channels according to U.S. law runs counter to our principles as a nation and represents a gross overreach of presidential power.  Instead of using executive actions to deny refuge to those fleeing horrendous violence and domestic abuse, the President ought to work with Congress to achieve the kind of bipartisan, comprehensive reforms needed to fix our broken immigration and asylum system.  Democrats are committed to engaging in the tough work of achieving reforms that secure our borders while keeping families together and maintaining America’s role as a beacon of hope for those seeking freedom and safety.”
