FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team was voted fifth in the Capital Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, the league announced today (Aug. 28).
Three-time defending champion Christopher Newport was tabbed as the unanimous favorite to four-peat in the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll. The Captains, who captured their third-straight CAC Tournament Championship last fall, received five first-place votes and 25 points to earn the top position in voting.
Mary Washington claimed second place with 20 points and one first-place vote, followed closely by Salisbury (17 points) in third. York (12 points) edged St. Mary’s (11 points) for fourth place, with Southern Virginia (5 points) rounding out the team rankings.
Head CoachPeter Krech ’09is welcoming back seven starters to the field along with eight first years. Included in those seven is junior forward/midfielder,Emmey German. In the 2018 season, German finished as the second-highest scorer on the team with three goals and was able to notch one assist. German earned Second Team All-CAC honors back in 2017.
During that season German was tied for fourth in the league with a team-high of three game-winning goals. Those three goals were included in German’s total of six goals from the season which was good for the best on the team and the shared ninth spot in the CAC. This season the Seahawks’ captains will be returning starterLauren BakerandMadison Webb.
The Seahawks will begin their season on Aug. 30 at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium against McDaniel College. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
With the loss of Penn-State Harrisburg and Frostburg State from the league, the CAC will feature six teams this fall. The first round of the CAC Tournament will be on Saturday, Nov. 2 and conclude with the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 9.
