FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s tennis team was picked sixth in the 2020 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Women’s Tennis Preseason Poll, the league announced today (Feb. 6). 

Mary Washington was once again chosen as the preseason favorite in the 2020 CAC Women’s Tennis Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Eagles, who carry a 16-year CAC Championship streak into this spring, received all five eligible first-place votes and 25 points to land atop the poll.

Christopher Newport, which finished in second place for the fifth year in a row last season, earned one first-place vote and 21 points to take second place in the rankings. Salisbury was selected third with 17 points, followed by Southern Virginia (12 points) and York (10 points) as the projected fourth and fifth teams, respectively. St. Mary’s College (5 points) rounded out the six CAC teams in the coaches’ poll.

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s tennis team failed to win a match last season, but have shown improvement in the fall season finishing 1-2. The Seahawks return seven student-athletes and six starters from last season. St. Mary’s College welcomes newcomersSydney Anderson,Hannah Gorel,Celina KaufmanandBella Sternerto this year’s roster.

The Seahawk women’s tennis team will open up their Spring season on Feb. 22 when they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 p.m. match. In March, St. Mary’s College will travel to the warmth of Hilton Head, South Carolina to compete in the PTR Spring Tennis Fest from Mar. 15-20. Next, the Seahawks will begin CAC play when they travel to Southern Virginia on Mar. 27 for a 12:00 p.m. match. Additionally, the Seahawks will host Christopher Newport on Apr. 18 at 12:00 p.m. for Spring Break-a-Sweat.

The CAC Tournament will begin Friday, Apr. 24, with the championship match slated for Friday, May 2.
