WALDORF, MD – Mckayla Wilkes’ campaign suspends canvassing due to COVID-19

Mckayla Wilkes, a candidate for Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, announced an immediate suspension of her campaign’s door-to-door canvassing operation due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Public safety comes first. We don’t want our campaign to contribute to the spread of a disease that has the potential to overwhelm our healthcare system and poses an especially great danger to the elderly and people with underlying health issues. For now, we will be relying on other methods for voter contact, including phone banking and text banking,” Wilkes said.

“We did not make this decision lightly. Our campaign has been knocking on thousands of doors every week, and we had ten canvasses scheduled for this weekend alone. We are proud of the culture we have built around talking to our neighbors. Our volunteers are fired up and our message is spreading – it’s part of who we are. But we are doing our best to campaign responsibly, and we call for other campaigns to do the same.

“COVID-19 is a healthcare issue, a housing issue, an environmental issue, and a labor issue. Our campaign’s fight for just policy in all these areas continues.”
