Solomons, MD- The Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge/Solomons Bridge is currently closed in both directions. The Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department states on its Facebook page that it will be closed for an extended period of time.

At 5;21 p.m. the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office sent out aNixle alert stating there was a disabled vehicle. NB Route 4/Cove POint Road and SB Route 4/HG Trueman Road were closed.

At 5:29 p.m. another alert went out stating citizens traveling from St. Mary’s County were encouraged to avoid Route 4 and find an alternate route.

At 5:52 the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office sent out a Nixle alerting residents to avoid Route 4.

At this time we have found out that this could be a HAZMAT situation. We have learned a propane tanker has broken down in front of the State Park and there was a strong odor of propane.
