LEONARDTOWN, MD –  On Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020, the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County convened as the Board of Health and met with county Health Officer Dr. Meenakshi Brewster and Director of Recreation and Parks Arthur Shepherd to discuss the challenges of COVID-19 and resuming fall youth sports activities.

As approximately 10,000 youth participate annually within the affiliated volunteer sports leagues in St. Mary’s County parks, the Commissioners have made the safety and well-being of young athletes their primary focus. During the Tuesday meeting, the Commissioners discussed the pandemic related challenges fall sports league leaders are facing, including social distancing, face coverings, spectators, and contact during athletic events.

Further discussion regarding youth sports and COVID-19 related safety precautions will take place Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2020, when the Commissioners reconvene as the Board of Health.

Visit the Recreation and Parks webpage for more information and to sign up to receive program updates and notifications.

Commissioner decisions and related public documents are available on the county government website in BoardDocs. St. Mary’s County Commissioner Meetings may be viewed live Tuesday mornings on SMCG Channel 95 or as a replay Friday nights at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are also available for on-demand viewing on the St. Mary’s County Government YouTube Channel.
