ASHINGTON, D.C. (March 4, 2022) – This month, AAA celebrates 120 years of advocating for the safe mobility of drivers and travelers alike. Started in 1902 by automotive enthusiasts who wanted to chart the path for better roads in America, AAA has transformed into one of North America’s largest membership organizations, providing roadside assistance, travel, discounts, financial and insurance services to enhance the life journey of more than 62 million members.
“AAA was built out of a commitment by a few to advocate for safe, efficient roads and enhanced mobility for all,” said Marshall Doney, President, and CEO of AAA. “People may know us for roadside assistance, but we are so much more than that. Today, AAA is a trusted voice consumer can turn to for all things mobility, travel, and beyond.”
Throughout AAA’s storied history, the federation has been instrumental in pushing for legislation and training to improve roadway safety for everyone, whether for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, or first responders. This includes advocating for the creation of the Interstate Highway System in 1956, fighting for Move Over laws in all 50 states, and developing driver education programs for all ages. Last year, AAA’s School Safety Patrol program celebrated its centennial. The School Safety Patrol program is the world’s largest school-based safety program. AAA regularly advocates for stronger impaired and distracted driving laws, as well as demanding stronger seatbelt legislation across the country. Much of this work is supported by proprietary research conducted by AAA automotive experts and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety on these same issues.
As AAA embarks on its 120th year, it stands among a small number of industry pioneers still in existence. The longevity of organizations has eroded over the years, impacted by economic depressions and?recessions, mergers, and technological disruptions. In 2020, the average lifespan of an S&P 500 company was just over 21 years. AAA, the original auto club, has become so much more over the last 120 years, illustrating that the legendary organization is not just surviving, but thriving, as it moves into the digital age.
“The fact that, 120 years later, our membership continues to grow is a testament to the organization continuing to evolve in step with the needs of our members,” said Ragina Cooper Ali, AAA Mid-Atlantic Spokesperson for Maryland and Washington, D.C. “What AAA members need right now is different even compared to a few years ago, so AAA services are adapting to meet those changing needs, something which will be apparent to anyone who walks through our doors, interacts with us online, or through our mobile app.”
Anniversary Open Houses
AAA is marking its anniversary by inviting members and non-members alike to experience the new technology and innovative solutions in travel planning that will be on full display during our celebratory open house events across the region.
Enjoy snacks, giveaways, and prizes while viewing demonstrations on such things as Digital TourBooks, Electric Vehicle Resources, and Expedited Passport Services. AAA Travel advisors will be on hand to assist anyone considering travel and in need of help navigating the ‘new normal’ – whether exploring the possibilities for Spring Break, a summer road trip, or a more extravagant ‘revenge’ travel experience.
“As Americans prepare for what could be a very busy summer travel season, AAA will be greeting them with new technology and innovative processes to ensure the best possible experience, prioritizing safety and savings, just as we have been doing for 120 years,” Ali added.
