ANNAPOLIS, MD – Delegate Kathy Szeliga (R-Harford and Baltimore County) sent a letter to Governor Larry Hogan Tuesday urging him to send relief payments of $500 – $1,000 to Maryland taxpayers. Today, Comptroller Peter Franchot announced revenue estimates creating a record-high $7 billion surplus.

“With huge and growing surpluses in the Maryland state budget, I continue to urge Gov. Hogan to include a $1,000 relief payment to each and every Maryland taxpayer,” said Delegate Kathy Szeliga. “Taxpayers have clearly been overcharged and families are being crushed by gas prices, food prices, and rising energy costs.” There are less than 3,000,000 taxpayers in Maryland and a $1,000 check would only utilize half of the surplus.

Governor Hogan is proposing a freeze to the gas tax and funding retiree income tax relief.  Comptroller Franchot is proposing a 3-month gas tax holiday and sending a $2,000 check to low-income Marylanders.  “Rather than picking winners and losers, Governor Hogan and the Maryland legislature should send a relief payment to all families who are struggling today,”  Szeliga commented.  “Addressing the soaring gas prices is also important and would help every Maryland resident and business.”

$7 billion is an enormous amount of cash at legislators’ disposal, and every special interest group is lined up in Annapolis with some idea of what to do with the money. The federal government has printed some of that money and taxpayers and consumers have overpaid the rest.

Delegate Kathy Szeliga concluded, “the best thing to do with that money is to send it back to the people who paid for that huge surplus; taxpayers.”

  1. So why has Hogan not listened to anyone about stimulus checks? In an email I received from his office it said it’s not the states problem to send money, it’s the federal government’s job.

  2. Government just bluffing, acting like they’re gonna give us some money.if they do theyll just have the police write us more petty tickets or raise the taxes etc… they aren’t doing shit for us but stealing from us. Wake up america.

    1. It’s his last term in office so why should he care, he is spending money on everything else. And he wants to run for president. I emailed him and said my vote will be in the toilet if he wants it.

  3. Marylanders need something because:
1.) This pandemic is far from over
2.) Inflation is hurting everyone, not just higher class
3.) It’s going to get worse before it gets any better.

  4. Horgan don’t give a damn about nobody it’s sad that other states are getting the help they need but Horgan rather see us suffer then to help I’m over this state as soon as I can move my family out this state we are gone cus Horgan don’t give a damn about us period!!!

  5. I think its crazyyyyyy that Maryland isn’t giving any relief as so many other states have given to their people we are working just to keep gas in our vehicles to make to and from work besides the $ ever given to us the people they the states are getting it right back!

  6. HOGAN WHY AREN’T YOU HELPING US ?? I think its bs that so many other states are helping their people and marylanders are working just to pay for their gas to get back and forth to work! We are barely able to eat!!!

  7. Because it’s his last term in office,, and he thinks he can win president. That way he can help even less people.

  8. I do not know why Hogan is not helping us with the gas and food prices that are continuing to go up. I am a democrat and have voted for Hogan both times, but if I help you can you now help us.

  9. Maryland always seem to be the last State to do something for its people. Some States have been giving out stimulus payments since the onset of coronavirus. All this negotiation about squeegee boys and paying them, but no negotiations about helping all people of Maryland. If it’s that much money in access, give back to the people that helped you build that stock pile. Hogan seems to have a blind eye on what’s really happening in Maryland, because we take a licking and keep on ticking. We need to start making all politicians work for their exorbitant income. They make promises during election time that never transpires.

  10. It’s already August kids going back to school why haven’t Maryland gotten any help yet I see other states have help but nothing for us when will we be getting some help is the question?????
