LA PLATA, MD – A tragic accident on Maryland Route 6 claimed the life of a 30-year-old bicyclist, Gregory Herman, following a collision with an SUV on Sunday, February 18, 2024. Maryland State Police responded to the scene at approximately 3:55 PM, near the intersection of Charles Street and Applegrove Court in La Plata, where the devastating incident occurred.

Preliminary investigations by the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack and the specialized CRASH Team reveal that Herman, a resident of Waldorf, Maryland, was riding a Trek bicycle westbound on Maryland Route 6. Concurrently, Ruby Hughlett, 69, also from Waldorf, was driving a Lexus RX and attempted a left turn onto Applegrove Court from the eastbound lane of the same road. It appears Hughlett failed to yield the right of way to the bicyclist during the turn, resulting in Herman’s bicycle striking the passenger side of the SUV.

Despite the immediate response, Herman suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to MEDSTAR/Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. for urgent care. Unfortunately, his injuries proved fatal, and he passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. Hughlett, on the other hand, refused medical treatment at the accident scene.

The Maryland State Police CRASH Team has taken charge of the ongoing investigation, striving to piece together the circumstances that led to this fatal encounter. Authorities are reaching out to the public for any witnesses of the crash to come forward with information that might aid in the investigation. Sergeant J. Zimmerman of the MSP CRASH Team has provided contact details for potential witnesses to share their accounts, urging them to call (301) 392-1231 or send an email to justin.zimmerman@maryland.gov, referencing case number 24-MSP-005477.
