LEONARDTOWN, MD – A novel opportunity has emerged for St. Mary’s County high school and college students aiming to dive into the public health sector. The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) announced the inauguration of the Public Health Junior Fellowship program. This initiative is designed to provide a hands-on learning experience in community health and leadership development. The department is now inviting applications for the pilot run of this promising program, set to span from March to June 2024.
The Public Health Junior Fellowship is strategically crafted to immerse students in public health, focusing on community health issues pertinent to their academic year. It is an unparalleled chance for students to enhance their leadership prowess while gaining a deep understanding of public health dynamics. The pilot phase of this fellowship, taking place from March through June 2024, aims to fine-tune the framework for a more extensive, year-long fellowship.

Selected participants, referred to as junior fellows, will be at the forefront of various health department initiatives. Their responsibilities include engaging with existing health programs for youth and young adults, steering health department projects tailored to their demographic, and organizing peer groups within their schools. These groups will serve as catalysts for promoting health and wellness across the broader St. Mary’s County community.
Dr. Meena Brewster, the Health Officer for St. Mary’s County, underscored the importance of this initiative. “The new Public Health Junior Fellowship is a fantastic way for local high school and college students to explore a career in public health while developing their leadership skills,” she remarked. Brewster elaborated on the immersive nature of the fellowship, highlighting the hands-on experience fellows will gain in tackling local health issues, mobilizing their peers, and ultimately shaping the future of community health in St. Mary’s County.
