In a significant development within the Prince George’s County Police Department, Corporal David Hardester faces suspension without pay following his arrest on serious charges, including attempted murder. The early hours of the morning witnessed a grave altercation in Charles County, leading to Hardester’s apprehension, alongside accusations of second-degree assault in St. Mary’s County related to a domestic incident.
The incident unfolded shortly after 1:00 am, with Hardester allegedly discharging his service weapon during a dispute in Charles County. Miraculously, the intended victim escaped unharmed. The altercation involved known parties, adding a layer of complexity to the case. Additionally, Hardester faces charges of second-degree assault connected to an earlier domestic episode at his residence in St. Mary’s County.
Hardester, a member of the force since 2005 and currently assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, found himself in custody following the response to a shots-fired report around 1:30 am on February 23. The emergency call led officers to Crain Highway in Newburg, where a caller reported being shot at by an acquaintance. The law enforcement’s quick response resulted in locating Hardester’s vehicle near Budd’s Creek Road, leading to his identification and subsequent arrest.
The 42-year-old officer from Mechanicville was apprehended, and a firearm was recovered at the scene. The investigation disclosed that the victim and Hardester had arranged to meet in a parking lot, where an argument over a lingering issue escalated, resulting in Hardester firing at the victim as he attempted to leave. Despite the shot fired, the victim was unscathed. The suspect’s attempt to flee was thwarted as the victim, maintaining contact with 911, directed officers to the suspect’s location.
Hardester now faces charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, and related offenses. He is currently detained at the Charles County Detention Center, awaiting a hearing before a district court commissioner. Officer Weinmann is spearheading the investigation into this alarming incident.
