SPARKS GLENCOE, Md. — In a remarkable display of skill and teamwork, the St. Mary’s College women’s lacrosse team clinched their fourth consecutive victory with a 20-11 win against Capital University on Wednesday night at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters’ William G. Tierney Field. This victory brings St. Mary’s College’s season record to 4-2, matching Capital University’s record post-game.
The game’s standout performer, junior attacker Hailey Betch from Severna Park, Maryland, led the charge with an impressive seven goals, marking a season-best performance. Her efforts were pivotal in securing the win for the Seahawks, who demonstrated both offensive prowess and strategic defense against the Comets.

From the beginning, St. Mary’s College established a strong lead, with Betch achieving a hat trick and an assist in the first quarter alone. Senior captain MC Mortimer contributed significantly with two assists, setting the stage for a 5-1 lead early in the game. However, Capital University mounted a strong comeback in the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to briefly take the lead. The Seahawks, undeterred, responded decisively with Betch and sophomore attacker Katelin Scala leading a 4-0 run to end the half 10-7 in favor of St. Mary’s College.
The second half of the game saw the Seahawks extending their lead, despite Capital’s attempt to close the gap. With strategic plays and a solid defense, St. Mary’s College maintained control, concluding the game with a nine-goal advantage.
Statistical analysis of the game reveals the Seahawks’ dominance in key areas. Outshooting Capital 46-25 and winning the ground ball battle 26-11, St. Mary’s College showcased their strength and agility. Sophomore defender Kendall Curry stood out defensively, collecting a career-high five ground balls and contributing to the team’s defensive efforts.
Other notable performances included junior attacker Ella Baynes, who achieved career-highs with four goals and five points, and Mortimer, who not only distributed four assists but also contributed a goal and three draw controls. The goalkeeping duo of first-years Allie Greeley and Annie Wise combined for seven saves, further solidifying the team’s defense.
For Capital University, players Grace Osborn and Andi Henry each netted three goals, with Osborn also leading in draw controls. Goalkeeper Emily Serafinchon made an impressive 17 saves, showcasing her skills despite the team’s loss.
Looking ahead, St. Mary’s College is set to face No. 6 Franklin & Marshall and No. 24 Denison in Clearwater, Fla., on March 12 and March 14, respectively.
