James A. Richards, a prominent figure representing Prince George’s County, has officially resigned from the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) Board of Directors, effective February 19, 2024. Having served since 2001, Richards’ departure marks the end of an era of dedicated service both to SMECO and the wider community.
Throughout his tenure on the Board, Richards has been celebrated for his steadfast dedication to economic development, education, and enhancing the quality of life for SMECO members. “James Richards’ dedication to service over many decades—both at SMECO and in the local community—shows his commitment to making a positive impact. We could always rely on Mr. Richards to be an advocate for the economic development, education, and quality of life of our SMECO members,” SMECO president and CEO Sonja Cox remarked. Cox also highlighted Richards’ commitment to transparency and his valuable contributions to the cooperative.
Richards, a Brandywine resident, has a distinguished background outside his contributions to SMECO. He is a retired firefighter from the Prince George’s County Fire Department, where he earned the Gold Star of Valor, the department’s highest honor, in addition to the Meritorious Service Award from the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. His dedication to service extends beyond his firefighting career; Richards also retired as a senior master sergeant after 22 years in the D.C. Air National Guard. His academic credentials include an associate’s degree in fire science from Prince George’s Community College and further studies at the University of Maryland. Richards is also an entrepreneur, owning Richards Enterprises, and contributes to his community as a director of the Brandywine Lions Club.
During his influential service on SMECO’s Board, Richards made significant contributions through his involvement in the Capital Projects Committee and the Public Relations Committee. His commitment to excellence and leadership was further recognized through several prestigious awards from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, including the Credentialed Cooperative Director designation, the Board Leadership Certificate, and the Director Gold certification.
Richards’ resignation is a significant moment for SMECO, as it reflects the end of a significant chapter in the cooperative’s history. His contributions have left a lasting impact, not only through the strategic decisions made during his tenure but also through the personal commitment he demonstrated toward the welfare and development of the SMECO community and its members. His legacy includes a strong emphasis on the importance of service, leadership, and community engagement, principles that will continue to guide the cooperative’s mission and values in the years to come.
As SMECO moves forward, the void left by Richards’ departure will be felt, but his example will continue to inspire current and future leaders of the cooperative. The search for a successor who can carry on Richards’ legacy of dedication and service to the community begins, with the aim of continuing to uphold the high standards of leadership and commitment that Richards exemplified throughout his years of service.
