In a bid to nurture young minds and kindle a passion for mathematics, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) successfully hosted the Elementary School Mathematics Challenge on March 16 at Theodore G. Davis Middle School. This event, sponsored by the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), is part of a broader initiative to make mathematics a compelling and enjoyable subject for students, thereby laying a solid foundation for future success in the realms of science, technology, and engineering.

The competition draws bright young mathematicians from the fourth and fifth grades of schools across Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties. Selection for the math teams is a carefully considered process, focusing on students who show a keen interest in mathematics. Throughout the school year, these students engage in rigorous practice sessions under the guidance of their coaches. These sessions not only focus on mastering above-grade-level mathematical concepts but also emphasize the development of critical skills such as collaboration, active listening, and perseverance.
The challenge is structured to test students in a variety of mathematical scenarios. The competition kicked off with a timed individual test, assessing students’ mathematical understanding and proficiency. Following this, teams tackled four complex problems, with their performance evaluated on accuracy, reasoning, and the strategic application of mathematical principles. The final scores were a composite of both individual achievements and the team’s collaborative efforts during the challenge.
This initiative by CCPS and SMECO highlights the importance of mathematics in educational curricula and aims to dispel the notion that math is a daunting subject. By introducing students to the joy and satisfaction that can be found in solving mathematical problems, the challenge hopes to inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers, and technologists.
