PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — In a significant push towards enhancing community safety and awareness, Calvert County Government has declared April as Flood Awareness Month, a move aimed at urging residents to gear up against the frequent flood hazards that threaten the area. With a strategic focus on education and preparation, the county outlines a multi-pronged approach to combat the risks posed by storm surges, heavy rainfalls, and coastal flooding, which are common threats in Maryland.
Maryland is no stranger to flooding, the state’s most prevalent natural hazard. Recognizing this, Calvert County is dedicating resources to ensure its residents are well-prepared and informed. Key recommendations from the county include forming a comprehensive household emergency plan, assembling an essential emergency kit, staying informed through local alerts, protecting property through measures like flood insurance and proper equipment maintenance, and reporting flood-prone areas using the MyCoast Maryland mobile app.
A notable initiative this Flood Awareness Month is the launch of a weekly educational video series on the county’s YouTube channel. These videos are designed to educate residents on various aspects of flood awareness, including floodplain mitigation and the benefits of the National Flood Insurance Program.
Further strengthening its commitment to flood resilience, Calvert County has announced upcoming updates to crucial resources. These include an updated flood hazard map providing detailed information on specific flood risks, enhancements to the Calvert County Flood Mitigation Plan, and improvements to the county’s Community Rating System (CRS) rating. These efforts are expected to not only improve community safety but also provide financial benefits through reduced flood insurance rates, thanks to a better CRS score.
Residents are encouraged to engage with these resources and initiatives to enhance their preparedness for flood hazards. More information on the county’s floodplain management efforts and the available resources can be found at www.CalvertCountyMd.gov/Floodplain.
