In an ambitious move to bridge the oral health gap for adults on Medicaid, the Maryland Dental Action Coalition (MDAC) has unveiled a new initiative aimed at maximizing the reach and efficacy of the Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program. This comprehensive effort, dubbed “My Reason to Smile,” targets Medicaid-enrolled adults across Maryland, leveraging a robust social media strategy and a dedicated website to educate and engage beneficiaries.
The campaign employs a multi-platform approach, with content scheduled to roll out across Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. The strategic use of organic and paid posts, alongside YouTube ads, is designed to underscore the program’s extension to all adults with full Maryland Medicaid coverage. This pivotal expansion, facilitated by SKYGEN, marks a significant enhancement in the state’s commitment to oral health, emphasizing that good dental care is foundational to overall wellness. By removing financial barriers such as premiums, deductibles, and copays, the initiative encourages individuals to prioritize dental visits.

The MDAC’s initiative goes beyond mere promotion; it provides a comprehensive resource through the newly launched website, myreasontosmile.org. The site serves as a central hub for Medicaid adults to find detailed information on eligibility, covered services, provider locations, and additional support services like transportation. It also extends materials to dental providers and community partners to disseminate information further about the program’s benefits.
Since its inception in January 2023, the Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program has already made notable strides, with nearly 200,000 adults availing dental care, about a quarter of those eligible. This achievement is part of a broader strategy to enrich the state’s dental care workforce, with 40% of Maryland’s dental professionals now participating in the program.
However, despite these advances, challenges remain. A recent MDAC survey highlighted a significant awareness gap, with 41% of respondents unaware of their eligibility for Medicaid-funded dental care. Additionally, the survey revealed a concerning trend of dental neglect, with nearly half of the participants not visiting a dentist in over two years, primarily due to insurance uncertainties and lack of awareness about covered services.
The “My Reason to Smile” campaign seeks to address these barriers head-on. By enhancing awareness and clarifying coverage details, the initiative aims to significantly increase dental care uptake among Maryland’s Medicaid population. Mary Backley, MDAC’s CEO, expressed gratitude towards the Maryland General Assembly for their bipartisan support in expanding Medicaid to include dental care. Backley emphasized the campaign’s role in continuing to educate and motivate eligible Marylanders to seek dental care, viewing knowledge dissemination and social media as critical tools in this endeavor.
