WALDORF, Md. — In a move aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and reducing traffic congestion, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) announced adjustments to the start and end times for four schools, set to take effect in August 2024, at the commencement of the 2024-2025 academic year. Additionally, CCPS has disclosed the operating hours for the new Early Learning Center in Waldorf, slated to open its doors this August.
The changes impact William A. Diggs, T.C. Martin, and J.P. Ryon elementary schools, along with Theodore G. Davis Middle School. According to CCPS, these adjustments are designed to optimize transportation routes, alleviate traffic overlap near the J.P. Ryon campus, and facilitate the transition of T.C. Martin students back to their renovated campus from the Transition School in Waldorf.
The revised school hours are as follows:
- William A. Diggs Elementary School will operate from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., marking a 10-minute adjustment to better meet transportation needs.
- T.C. Martin Elementary School’s hours will shift to 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., a 15-minute change, restoring the school’s original schedule before renovations.
- J.P. Ryon Elementary School will see its day extended to 9:20 a.m. to 3:50 p.m., a 20-minute modification aimed at reducing traffic congestion with John Hanson Middle School.
- Theodore G. Davis Middle School will adjust its schedule to 8:55 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., altering morning and afternoon routines slightly to improve bus service timing in conjunction with North Point High School or Mattawoman Middle School.
Furthermore, the operating hours for the soon-to-open Early Learning Center in Waldorf have been set from 9:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. This schedule mirrors the Early Learning Center in La Plata, demonstrating CCPS’s commitment to consistency across its early learning programs. The Waldorf center will be located at 3155 John Hanson Drive, a facility currently serving as the CCPS Transition School.
These school time changes, CCPS explains, are part of a broader effort to enhance the district’s operational effectiveness and address specific logistical challenges. By adjusting start and end times, the district aims to streamline transportation logistics, improve traffic flow, and ensure a smoother, more efficient experience for students, staff, and the community.
Parents, students, and staff are being notified about the upcoming changes, as schools prepare for the transition to the new schedules next academic year.
