Lt. j.g. Kayla Harris, a native of Annapolis, Maryland, has recently achieved a significant milestone in her naval career by earning the Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer qualification. This accomplishment took place aboard the U.S. Navy warship USS Boxer, which operates out of San Diego, California.

Harris’s journey began at Broadneck High School, where she graduated in 2016. She went on to attend the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 2020. Harris joined the Navy three years ago, embarking on a career that has now seen her achieve this distinguished qualification.

The USS Boxer, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, is the sixth U.S. ship to bear the name, with its history tracing back to the original HMS Boxer captured during the War of 1812. The ship’s primary mission includes transferring Marines, equipment, and supplies, as well as supporting helicopters and other aircraft. The Boxer’s crew consists of approximately 1,200 members and can accommodate up to 1,800 Marines.

Navy officials emphasize the crucial role that talented individuals like Harris play in maintaining the security and prosperity of the United States. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and the security of undersea fiber optic cables being paramount, the Navy’s mission is integral to national and global stability.

Harris’s role is part of a larger Navy operation that functions globally and continuously, promoting national prosperity and security. “We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

The importance of recruiting and retaining skilled personnel from diverse backgrounds cannot be overstated. The Navy’s commitment to this mission ensures that it remains capable of meeting its extensive responsibilities.

Harris’s achievement is not just a personal milestone but also a testament to the dedication and excellence required to serve in the Navy. Her qualification as a Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer reflects her commitment to the values of competency, excellence, and honor within the supply corps community.
