Neil Virk, a junior at Thomas Stone High School, has been elected as the Student Member of the Board (SMOB) for the Charles County Board of Education for the 2024-2025 school year. A total of 2,408 students from grades 6-12 cast their votes in the election, which was held from April 15 to May 17.
Virk received a decisive 63% of the votes, totaling 1,513 ballots. His opponent, Lauren Compton, a junior at La Plata High School, garnered 37% of the votes, equating to 895 ballots. The election results were verified by the Charles County Association of Student Councils (CCASC) Election Oversight Committee.
The election process included a primary election where both Virk and Compton advanced to the final ballot. Details of the election process are available on the CCASC website. Virk is set to be sworn into his new role during the Board of Education meeting in June.
As the newly elected SMOB, Virk will serve a one-year term, taking over from the current Student Member of the Board, Treasure Perkins. Perkins, a junior at Westlake High School, has held the position for the 2023-2024 school year. Virk will shadow Perkins at the upcoming Board meeting on May 21 to ensure a smooth transition.
The role of the Student Member of the Board is significant, providing a voice for the student body in the Board’s decisions. Virk’s election reflects the active participation and democratic engagement of Charles County students in their education system.
