Leonardtown’s Brudergarten Beer Garden came alive this weekend with the sounds and sights of the Medieval, Viking, and Renaissance eras during the annual RenFest Southern Maryland. The event, a vibrant celebration of historical reenactment, featured entertainment, food, drink, artisan vendors, demonstrations, and a host of activities for children and adults alike.

A highlight of the festival was the Fairy Trail Fairy House Contest, which saw 11 enchanting entries from local artists and enthusiasts. Visitors had the opportunity to explore the Fairy Trail, admire the magical creations, and cast their votes for their favorite fairy houses. The winners were announced before the popular Pub Sing event.

The third-place winner, “Mystic Manor,” was submitted by Aliana Long, earning her a $50 gift card to SOF Market. In second place was “Mystic Moss Meadow,” a collaborative effort by Ashley and Mathew Durben and Daniel Marstellar, who received a $75 gift card to SOF Market. The grand prize, a $100 gift card to SOF Market, went to Katie Kerns for her whimsical creation, “Mulberry Thicket.”

In a heartfelt message on their Facebook page, the RenFest Southern Maryland organizers expressed immense gratitude to the community and attendees. “THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Southern Maryland, and all of you who came from way out of town, and everywhere in between, to enjoy RenFest with us!” the post read. The organizers shared their joy at seeing the festival come to life and the smiles on attendees’ faces as they enjoyed the various attractions.

The festival’s success was attributed to the collective efforts of many. The post continued, “A huge thank you to the staff of Brudergarten Beer Garden at Shepherd’s Old Field Market, Viking Axe Throwing, and Shepherd’s Old Field Market, entertainment artists, actors, vendors, technical and support people, coordinators, volunteers, photographers, announcers, and local businesses that provided us with in-kind sponsorships because they wanted to help make this thing succeed!”

Special thanks were extended to the Town of Leonardtown for their belief and support in guiding the festival. The organizers conveyed their deep appreciation for the volunteers who helped build, paint, organize, provide security, and handle logistics.

A serene photo shared by the organizers, taken the night before the event, captured the enchanting atmosphere of the Fairy Trail. “It felt magical, and it felt like the calm before the ‘truth’!” the post reflected. Despite uncertainties about the event’s success, the turnout exceeded expectations, bringing joy and a sense of accomplishment to the festival team.

RenFest Southern Maryland stands as a testament to the power of community and the shared love for historical reenactment and celebration. The event not only provided entertainment but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and appreciation for the region’s rich cultural heritage. As the organizers hoped, the attendees indeed had as much fun at RenFest Southern Maryland as the team had in creating the event.
