La Plata, MD – The Charles County Public Library (CCPL), in collaboration with the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism, is set to launch the 2024 Summer Learning Challenge with a special event on Saturday, June 8, 2024. This kick-off event, hosted at the Potomac Library branch and Ruth B. Swann Park, promises a day full of free, family-friendly activities designed to promote education, literacy, and wellness.

The celebration aligns with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Family Health Day, encouraging community engagement through various interactive and educational activities. The event aims to foster a love for learning and healthy living among participants of all ages.

“We are thrilled to kick off another exciting summer of learning and fun,” said KennethWayne Thompson, Executive Director of Charles County Public Library. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together, discover new parts of their community, and explore the world that reading offers.”

“Last year, we had over 400 of our residents attend the first Summer Learning and Family Fitness Kickoff Party at Ruth B. Swann Park, and we are thrilled to be partnering with the Charles County Public Library again this summer,” said Ju’Wann Jones, Chief of Recreation for Charles County Recreation, Parks & Tourism. “Our team has a wonderful day of games, demonstrations, and activities for our families and residents to enjoy, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone out there.”

The event will take place from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Potomac Branch of the Charles County Public Library and Ruth B. Swann Park. Thanks to the generous support from The Citizens for the Charles County Public Library, Inc. (C4CCPL), Charles County Recreation, and the library, all activities are free of charge.
